THE WAY I USED TO LOOK AT YOU
With those blue eyes,
And brown hair.
Those muscles on you,
And the clothes in red.
That greasy old hat,
And the spot you once sat.
The smell of your sweat,
And the way you said, “Hi.”
Were always great,
Until one day you said, “Goodbye.”
Oh the way I used to look at you,
The things I never knew.
You were always my hero,
Until you backed down to zero.
Oh the way I used to look at you,
The things I never knew.
Then one day you told a lie,
And ended it with a goodbye.
Every morning at 6 o’clock,
You’d leave for work.
I waited all day,
So I could see the look on your face.
When you saw the picture,
Of you and me at a chase.
I remember I was in preschool,
You said that morning you’d be late.
And that was the lie you told,
Because you went to New York State.
You took that greasy old hat,
And the clothes in red.
The only thing you left was the spot you sat,
A picture and one empty on mama’s bed
You never told me why,
You just left me there to cry.
And now I am 21,
A new life has just begun.
Ever since you told that nasty lie,
I wondered why you said, “Good-bye.”
I thought you’d come home again.
And do the time you forgot to spend.
You were always on the road,
Just letting me grow old.
Staying out of my life,
Making me go through pain and strife.
Now I only have that little picture of me and you,
I was in preschool and you were 21,
But why’d you have to tell that lie,
Then end it with a goodbye.
Now I have a wife and a little boy,
I’m gonna stay with them and experience the joy.
All that fun you forgot to spend,
I don’t want their life to have a bad end.
Still mama says you made a great husband and father, too,
Even though you left, we still love you.
So if you hear of me, please come back,
And maybe we can watch cartoons and have a snack.
But what I won’t do now that I have a new life,
Is make my two loved ones, and mama too,
Never go through that pain and strife.
At least never make them blue.
I’ll always wonder why,
You last word was good-bye.
